Life’s too short to say no to cake…even on fake cake!

I tried to think of a way to make a fake cake for my cake toppers without using any Styrofoam. I had this idea to use a cardboard box instead since that’s more easily available then a wall putty as it’s ‘icing’.

Materials you will need:

  • Cardboard box
  • Wall putty
  • Glue gun
  • Acrylic Paint (optional)
  • Piping bag (optional)

Here’s the steps to make a fake cake:

Start with rectangular cut cardboard. Decide how tall you want the cake to be. In this tutorial, I used 4 inches tall cardboard.

Roll the cardboard to make a cylindrical-shaped box.

Add tape to fix the cylinder box.

Get a piece of cardboard to cover one end of the cylinder.

Trace the inner part of the cylinder.

Cut out the circular template.

Insert the circular cut out on the cylinder

Place it properly on the cylinder.

Apply glue stick to fix it on the edge of the cardboard

Now you’re ready to apply the wall putty.

You can buy wall putty online or in hardware stores. It is used on cement walls as finishing

If you like to add some color on the cake’s icing, you can use acrylic paint mixed in the wall putty.

You can also add a bit of water to thin out the consistency of the mixture. Be careful not to over do it because it will get runny and will be hard to apply on the cardboard.

Apply it on the cardboard, starting on top then on the sides.

Once you’re happy with the coating, you can let it dry overnight.

If you’re using it as a cake topper holder you can poke a hole in the middle part while it is still wet.

Once all dried, you can also add more ‘icing decoration’ on the fake cake.

I used a piping tip to add decoration to this one. It’s my first time to pipe a fake icing so please excuse the messy outcome.

These are all the cake props I’ve made. The big yellow one was the first trial and I also made a mini version as well.

I made a detachable two tier cake as well.
